Chapter Thirteen

Another Friday, another day for me to sit in the contact room alone.

I’d tried to call my parents the first few weeks but had no luck after the first time. Aaron hadn’t answered, either. That one I’d chalked up to his new school, to being busy, to possibly not even knowing what had happened.

My parents had all but disowned me. Maybe no one had told him. Maybe he wondered why I hadn’t shown up at the school when I’d said I would, and he was worried sick. Maybe no one had told him anything?

Then why hasn’t he accepted any of my calls?

Today was a last-ditch effort. It was funny how quickly being on my own made me realize I didn’t have nearly as many people in my life as I’d thought. Before, when I’d been out in the real world, I’d constantly had others around me.

They’d wanted to talk to me, wanted to spend time with me, wanted to help me. I guess when shit hit the fan was when a person found out who was there for them.

And in my life, that seemed to be all of no one.

The ringing from the large screen went on, and my shoulders dropped in surrender. There was something soul crushing about sitting there, about hearing that ringing and having no one pick up.

At least I got to experience the moment on my own, without Deacon or another guard watching over me. It seemed after the first contact—especially given who it had been with—they didn’t feel the need to monitor each one.

They were recorded, if they needed anything, but it was nice not to feel the mockery or pity of spectators as every person in my life abandoned me.

“Hello?” Moa’s voice almost brought me to tears, and I lost the fight against them when her image popped up on the screen.

It felt like an eternity since I’d seen her, as if we had both changed so much.

Well, she hadn’t…she looked exactly as she had before. I supposed only I had changed.

Her eyes widened as they locked on me, the background behind her going still as if she’d stopped walking when she’d realized who had video called her.

“Hera?”

I nodded, then snatched the keyboard so I could type messages. “I miss you so much.” I typed the words without thinking about them, without thinking about anything.

“I heard what happened. I tried to call, but they won’t let any communication through, said I had to wait, that you were still in your probation period. God, I was so worried.”

I moved my fingers across the keys. “My parents said they aren’t going to come get me, that I should never get out. They said I’m a level 1, and those aren’t ever allowed to leave. I just want to come home.”

Moa wiped a finger below her eyes, and I suddenly wanted to take back every time I’d called her a bleeding heart, each time I’d said she had no idea what the real world was like. She was the only person from my old life who seemed to give a damn about me.
